kitchen DIY

It’s not a secret that kitchen renovation is an investment. It can last for years, and it can even increase the value of your home. Also, if you are looking to remodel your kitchen, then it’s even better.

If you have the tools and skills, remodeling your kitchen can spark not only personal satisfaction, but it can also save you money if you do it right. However, a simple mistake can make or break your project. So, here are some tips when remodeling your kitchen or any room in your home.

Just Go with the Flow

This is a statement that every expert DIYers avoid. Remember, you will have to spend money and time on your project. Therefore, you should plan carefully and execute it well too. It’s vital to consider your budget first. Find what you need, use what you can still apply, and spend a lot of time hunting for the right pieces for your kitchen in the right places.

You can start by creating a checklist of the items you currently have in your kitchen. And, in the next column, identify it should stay or should it go. Just like anything in life, nothing is permanent; so, we have to accept changes, even in your kitchen. Next, identify what the items you need are. While considering this, try to assess your kitchen activities. How often do you cook? How many people usually need seats? Do you always prepare for your friends and family?

These are just some of the questions and things you can do to jumpstart your renovation!

Alone is Better

We all know this isn’t true and doesn’t work, especially if you are conquering a big project like renovating your kitchen. You need to talk to experts for tips and advice and even need help when doing the project.

Always work with your friends and family to lessen the burden. Talk to a professional, too, to help you fine-tune your renovation plan. A small amount of consultation fee won’t hurt as long as you get the project right.

Leave the Cabinets and Lights Be

Sometimes, we forget the little things and go straight to the big ones, like repainting a wall or moving large appliances around the room. However, when it comes to renovating your kitchen, it’s essential to protect or move your cabinets and lights, too.

For cabinets, mind the gaps because not all homes are leveled perfectly, so check the gaps on the hanging cabinets. If you plan on moving your cabinets around, check the gaps and make sure to fill it with wood shims. This ensures that the cabinet stays aligned when you reattach it on the wall.

When you move your light fixtures, don’t forget to check the alignment, too. Line it correctly with your sink or kitchen island before attaching it on your ceiling. You can also check your electrical plan before anything else, and follow the correct line and placement of light fixtures.

Nothing Needs Protecting… Said No DIYer Ever

Protect the surfaces, kitchen items, and other kitchen fixtures when renovating. Avoid paint drips and debris dropping on your kitchen items and appliances.

You make a mudroom in your kitchen. Create this area to protect other items and rooms outside your kitchen renovation project. Quickly move in and out of your working area with plastic sheeting, poles, and adhesive zipper to protect other places.

Choose Appliances Last

Choose your appliances first, then your fixtures second. It’ll be easier to choose cabinets, countertops, and other fillers in your space if you already have the right dimensions of your appliances.

Choose your dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, etc. first, then select all the other items next, this way, you don’t have to worry about changing your floor plan because, for example, the oven doesn’t fit.

Lastly, don’t forget the big picture – you’re doing this to either save on cost, try your design skills, or whatever personal reasons you have – and enjoy the process!
